Langloan Canal Tunnel [North Portal]

Bank Street, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire.

Site of north portal of the Langloan Canal Tunnel, a short tunnel for a branch canal linking the Monkland Canal to a small canal basin by Drumpellier (Coal) Pit neat Langloan Iron Works.

In the late 1990s, road resurfacing in Buchanan Street exposed the top of a brickwork arched tunnel and further investigation broke through the arch into the still existing canal tunnel which had been seal at both ends and built over. To stabilise the housing above the tunnel was quickly filled with foamed concrete.

The structure of the tunnel still exists but is now inaccessible. No sign of the tunnel is visible.

Notes: The was some controversy over the infilling of the tunnel because the Monkland Canal is a scheduled ancient monument. Although this section was outside the scheduled area, the uncharacteristicly fast response of the local council made it impossible for the remains to be assessed by Historic Scotland.
