Mine (Coal), early-19th century or earlier.
"According to an early 19th century report (Landale), the Carhurlie Coal was worked by this Engine Pit, 11½ fathoms deep, to the west of Pilmuir Wood. Evidence suggests that there were, perhaps, several early coal-works in the vicinity of Pilmuir farm "but the workings in the Engine Pit were abandoned owing to heavy water, without a plan having been made." [Fife Pits]
