Torry Mine (No.1)

Clinkum Bank, Newmills, Fife.

Mine (Coal), 1951-65.

Opened 1953, operated by the NCB. Drift mine portal has been treated, site now occupied by wooded wasteland. Mine plans (e.g. S550) show two parallel & interconnected drift tunnels running W (along the S margin of the majority of the mine) from the No.1 & No.2 mine portals. The No.2 drift tunnel passes directly under the site of Valleyfield House (building now demolished), & the No.1 drift tunnel extends W for ca. 1.4 km to approx [NS 9990 8750]. The mine within the Blairhall Main Coal was worked using the longwall method, with much of the worked area extending N beyond the Bluther Burn. A SW area of workings essentially underlies the entirety of the field on the N side of the B9037 / A985 junction. Other than the N-S-trending Loco Level tunnel, the workings do not extend under the A985 road. See mine plans for area extent.

To minimise surface features in countryside N of Valleyfield, the Torry Mine workings were connected to a yard at Valleyfield Colliery by way of underground tunnels [sites #10669 & 10670].

Alternative Names: Torry No.1 Mine, Torrie Mine

Notes: Abandonment plan shows the No.1 & No.2 tunnels to have brick stoppings near entrances to prevent access.
