Valleyfield Colliery Surface Mine

Site of treated adit portal to subsea drift mine workings as part of the Valleyfield Colliery complex. An extensive (>2km) access passage with a gradient of 1 in 4 was driven SW from the given coordinates from 1948/49. This extended below the reclaimed area of Preston Island (formerly Valleyfield Bay), reaching the Kelty Main (No.1 Jersey) Coal under the Craigmore Rocks & probably areas of the Firth of Forth beyond.

Portal site now occupied by derelict land on ash lagoon grounds. This locality is reclaimed land shown as being intertidal on OS maps of 1866 & 1896 (reclaimed by time of 1968 ed.).
