Mine (Coal). Possibly the site of a bell pit with shaft now buried below field.
"Gladney's Pit was sunk to the Jenny Pate Coal at a depth of 56 fathoms just ½ mile to the south-west of Valleyfield House... The date at which Gladney's Pit was first worked is not known but for nearly five centuries, coal was wrought in this part of West Fife wherever it could be easily reached from the surface. The shallow holes and collapsed 'bell pits' of these early mines still mark the outcrops of the thicker seams." [Fife Pits]
