Coal Pit (shaft) marked on older OS maps. A tunnel from this shaft extended SE to access an area of pre-1870s workings located S of the New Engine Pit [site #11011]; see mine plan for Coalsnaughton Main Coal (in refs). Shaft sunk to Alloa Splint Coal with Cherry Coal at 32 fathoms (59m).
Alternative Names: Woodlands Shaft, Devonside Coal Pit [3]
Notes: The name Woodlands Pit is marked on the OS/Geological Survey map of 1926. The name is supposed to come from the woodlands surrounding the site. However, at the time when the area was mined the woods were a narrow strip to the west of Devonside/Coalsnaughton. The named pit was to the north of this wood. There was another pit to the south adjacent to Woodlands Farm.
