Mine (Coal), early-19th cent.
Site of buried shaft that formerly accessed extensive longwall workings in the Mynheer & Glassee coal seams, worked as part of Wellwood Colliery. Shaft is roughly centrally located over workings which extend far S & SW as to underlie Tremayne Place, much of Carswell Place, Pit Lane, & most of (new) Queen Anne High School.
Workings were largely limited to areas between the former Baldridge Farm road (the route of which was followed by the access road to QAHS & the E end of Lady Nairne Road) & the Wellwood railway line just N of Wellwood.
