Mine entry 288694-003 and 288694-010 are both referred to by the Coal Authority as "Fly Pit" or "Fly Shaft". Our research indicates that the Fly Pit was sunk to the Alloa Splint coal at a depth of c. 80 metres. The two mine plans in our possession pertaining to the Alloa Splint Coal both show the position of the Fly Pit, however comparative plotting of the two plans shows a c. 60 metre distance between the plotted shaft positions, comparable to the distance between the two Coal Authority shaft positions. We are of the opinion therefore that the two Coal Authority shaft references above may in fact only represent a single shaft which has been misplotted on one of the mine plans. Unfortunately there is insufficient information to point towards which position is the correct one and therefore cognisance must be taken of both positions until such time as further site investigation reveals the correct shaft location. Previous efforts were made by SBA Geo-Environmental in 2008 to locate the old pit shafts by means of surface trenching. However, the results of the investigation, while revealing evidence of colliery spoil in the general locations of the shafts, were inconclusive in accurately locating any of the old mine entries.
