Mine (Coal), 19th & 20th cent.
Site of adit level mouth in N bank of the Archer Beck, situated at SE end of small-scale but complex workings in the Lime Coal wrought from multiple old pits. Old waste workings labelled on the mine plan are probably those from the Bonnyblink Pit [site #11170]. The No.2 Mine was abandoned in the early 1940s by the Harelaw Lime & Coal Company. See mine plan in refs.
"Archerbeck Colliery marked the eastern boundary of the coalfield, active in the 1830s with two workable seams: an upper one 5 feet 10 inches thick and a lower one 3 feet thick located three yards beneath it. Mining here involved bell pits and adits, reflecting early extraction methods in the triangular exposed area of the field... Operations at Archerbeck Colliery extended until 1940, extending modest job opportunities into the early 20th century, though overall output remained low compared to larger Scottish coalfields, limiting transformative economic effects."
