A coal pit and shaft, which are depicted on 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Perth and Clackmannan 1866, sheet cxxxiv), are not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1978). [Trove.scot]
Alternative Names: No. 1 Gartenstars
Notes: Garnstars is an obvious contraction of Gartenstars. Gart or Gort in Scots Gaelic means field or enclosure. "en" or "an" means "of the" and "star" although debatable might be from 'stair' and may mean "causeway or crossing over a bog". Hence a "field at the crossing of a bog" not an unreasonable description of any land near the River Devon.
