Gough Burn Culvert [Outfall]

Craibstone, Newhills, Aberdeen City.

A concrete-lined, rectangular in cross-section linear tunnel carrying the Gough Burn, constructed as part of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) dual carriageway. Its generous walkable dimensions are due to its function as a safe route of passage for wildlife, particularly deer. Purpose-built ledges within provide smaller animals such as badgers with a dry route above the flood level of the streamway.

The intake point (W portal) is located at [NJ 87024 10205], below a former road that was blocked off when the AWPR opened.

Notes: The boulder-strewn streamway within has been separated into numerous sections by metal bars which provide useful stepping points to largely avoid infrequent pools along what is otherwise a typically-shallow section.

Given coordinates are for the tunnel's E portal, close to a footpath/cycleway. Length is based on Google Maps measurement.

The Gough Burn was also culverted further downstream at the A96 [NJ 8787 1073]. This section was extended during the 21st century when the Dyce Drive interchange was redeveloped, with the outfall now being in TECA grounds at [NJ 88015 10765] near the confluence with the Green Burn (which itself is also culverted at [NJ 8804 1087]).
