A cave with a stone wall extending part way across the entrance.
Old crofting village, one of many on peninsula lies at mouth of small stream at end of long deep valley. Apart from ruins of crofts there are remains of old jetty reaching out into sheltered bay opening into Sound of Sleat. Reminder of once-thriving fishing industry. Cave situated at head of small gorge on true left hand side of valley approximately level with inland limits of shingle beach. Single inclined rift of varying height for much of length eventually closing down to small tube at furthest point, (approximately 30 to 40 m). Floor rounded cobbles which taken with marshy area outside entrance indicates there might have been active stream flowing through cave at some time. Rock of dark brown to black colour & differs markedly from igneous rocks, (granite?) which make up rest of peninsula.
Cave marked at Sloch on the Ardnish Peninsula just east of Port an t-Sluichd.
The cave goes back about 100 feet, gets tighter and lower all the way and ends in a tiny round chamber that just fits 3 people.
Reference to large cave at Slocht.
To the east of the houses at the base of a cliff Allan found a cave, quite dry when we visited but it would probably get very wet in heavy rain. Loch nan Uamh (pronounced "ooh-a") is "loch of the caves" and there are many around its shoreline. One of them at least would have been a temporary shelter to Charles Edward Stuart who landed from a French frigate in fine style on 25 July 1745; by April 1746 he was taken off from the same loch as a fugitive by another French warship after the failed rebellion which would change the country permanently. [Ian Johnston]
