Trial Mine (late 19th Century).
"Opened as a trial between 1885 and 1900. 100 tons of ore were raised but not taken away." [SGT]
"The old mine is situated on the west side of the Palnure Burn, and about 250 yds. south-east of Talnotry Cottage, from which place there is a good road to Newton Stewart, about 6 miles to the southwest.
The deposit is said to have been discovered about 1885, and was at first opened up by a small syndicate, of which Major Stewart was one of the pron'oters. A little work was done, and about 100 tons of ore were raised, but none was taken away." [Earthwise]
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: Abandonment plan available (see refs).
The mine is within the lower part of a diorite intrusion in which nickel, copper and arsenic sank to the base near its contact with hornfelsed Ordovician and Silurian shales and greywackes.
Given 8 fig. coordinates from Scot' Geol' Trust.
