Sea Cave
Following a visit to the larger Black and White Caves of Barlocco in 2004, Jim Salvona, Pete Ireson and Ivan Young returned to Barlocco Bay:
'We did walk back along Barlocco beach to examine an opening in the eastern end of the cliffs where a vertical joint has been eroded. High tide stopped us getting to it, but it didn't appear to be deep. It heads back towards the sea but no daylight was visible and a connection to the previous cave [NX 70812 46725] is unlikely.' [Ivan Young]
According to the OS maps this is Black Neuk. There are conflicting reports of a connection to the narrow flooded rift to the south which the OS refer to as the Black Cove or Cave. [The GSG database refers to the flooded rift at NX 70812 46725 as Barlocco (cave) [3]. The alignment of Black Neuk makes a connection to Barlocco (cave) [3] very unlikely. It is however aligned with a blind fissure on the rock shore immediately to the east.
Alternate Names: None recorded.
Notes: Black Neuk - About 1 mile S.W. [South West] by South of Rascarrel This name applied to a small rocky recess at Barlocca [sic] bay it takes it names from its gloomy appearance. [ScotlandsPlaces]
The OS has consistently applied the name Black Cove to a flooded narrow rift south of Black Neuk. [OS maps]
Black Cave - About 1⅛ mile SW [South West] by South of Rascarrel This name applies to a natural Cave under a rocky precipice on the west side of Barlocco bay a short distance south of Black Neuk hence the name. [ScotlandsPlaces]
