Souterrain, destroyed.
"Underground structure dating to the Iron Age discovered in April 1868, by workmen who were cutting the branch railway between Cameron Bridge Station and Buckhaven, about a quarter of a mile from that station. It was embedded in a firm dry gravel bank overlooking the River Leven. Charcoal and bones discovered during excavation" [Archaeology Scotland report].
"The destroyed souterrain at Ashgrove, however, is reported to have been like the Aberdeenshire souterrain at Buchaam, though it was not seen by the man who made this observation, and perhaps we ought not to place too much reliance on his comparison" [Wainwright, 1963]
Alternative Names: Pirnie Souterrain
Notes: The original Cameron Bridge railway station was further W at [NO 3478 0013]. The railway cutting referred to in the report relates to the abandoned 'Muiredge Branch' line marked by a line of trees on the S side of the river at the given coordinates, not the active line upon which the new Cameron Bridge Station is found.
