Bullionfield Souterrrain

On 10 April 1955 Mr A MacLeod of Longforgan mentioned that he had seen an underground passage some 9 or 10 years previously when employed on a road-widening operation. He pointed out the exact spot, where the Kingsway cuts through a large rounded knoll, an ideal site for a souterrain.

It is clear that the souterrain was destroyed and removed when the Kingsway was made, but the last few feet of it remained embedded in the bank on the SE side of the road, and it was this surviving fragment that Mr MacLeod saw in 1946 when the bank was being cut back still further. He describes it as "an underground passage" about 7' wide and 6' high, "narrower at the top because the walls were built inwards" and carrying a roof of "huge stone slabs". The cavity was "mainly filled with black ash", and the whole structure was removed as the bank was cut back.
