A number of small, mostly supratidal, caves and arches below the village of Cummingston, approx. 2km east of Burghead. CM2 is remarkably wide, and CM3 is over 20 m wide as well.
There are no caves at Burghead itself, although the Burghead Well is a popular historical site of interest. Sandstone was previously quarried at Masonshaugh between Burghead and Cummingston, and multiple points on Clarkly Hill (now infilled). The Masonshaugh site is renowned for its Permian reptilian footprint trace fossils, and forms part of an extensive SSSI covering the coastal area from Burghead Harbour to the headland just east of cave CM1.
