"Extensive sea caves of the coast, also an abundance of freestone quarries. And in these rocks are some very extensive grand caverns, reaching underground farther than can be searched: some 100 yards, others more, in breaths, and from 60 to 100 yards in height; others smaller, frequently scooped out by the sea." Thus the Old Statistical Account. The dimensions are arm waving. None of the caves exceed 100 m in total length and the tallest cavern is 25m from floor to ceiling (Giant's Dome).
A number of the caves are of considerable archeological interest - such as Sculptor's Cave, Giant's Dome (aka Covesea 1) and Covesea 2 with evidence of human activity going back 12000 years BP.
There are no subtidal (sea water in at low tide) caves and not many intertidal ones. The majority are supratidal and many of those are partly filled with sand and have considerable talus ridges in front of them.
Alternate Names: Burghhead Caves
Notes: The coordinates given are for the Village of Covesea. There is no known cave at this location.
Covesea is pronounced 'cow-see'.
