Souterrain, site of.
The Old Statistical Accounts (1794) mentions a souterrain in the parish of Fowlis, discovered accidentally. It seems to have been demolished about the middle of the 19th century, for the OSA states that at Mains of Fowlis, 'a subterranean apartment' has been uncovered, its stone walls were removed to aid in raising the farm-steading, and the space filled in'. Alternative Names: Mains of Fowlis Souterrain
Notes: Mr Smith (in information provided to F T Wainwright) pointed out an area where the plough regularly turned up an unusual number of stones, among which were the upper stones of three querns, each about 14 inches (35cm) in diameter, similar to those found at Ardestie. This area is on the gentle slope of a low ridge, and was regarded by Wainwright as a very suitable site for a souterrain. [Angus HER]
