Cave near Montrose at Lower Warburton. Entrance facing due south, half a mile from the estuary of the Esk. Reportedly blocked by cliff fall.

"About 1847 earth-moving operations revealed a cave (since reburied by a cliff-fall) 300m NE of Nether Warburton farmhouse. At a low level within the fill of what was probably an outer chamber were found part of a human skull and a pot, while a higher layer contained the bones of ruminant animals, in some instances worked by man. Some of the bones from this layer are retained in Angus District Museum" [Canmore]

"Site of cave, set in the face of slope, found in 1847 during earthmoving operations." [HER]

Alternate Names: Kincardine Cave, Lower Warburton Cave, Nether Walburton Cave

Notes: Listed as 'Kincardine Cave' by Oldham (2007).

Coordinates are based on 6 figure NGR from archaeo' report. However, these are probably only 80-100m away from the true location, likely to be ~NO 7366 6340 based on description of it being 300m NE of the farm building. This places it along a raised sea cliff along which are outcrops of volcanic rock. As such, the site is probably an abandoned sea cave, now covered by landslip.

Examined 1847 by Alexander Bryson. Mouth of cave filled with soil containing bones of ox, deer, badger, hare, rabit, other small rodents and some bird bones.

Nether Walburton Cave seems to have been a typo.
