Cave on hillside below Glenbain Cottage in sheltered recess overlooking the River Traligill. Extremely small grassy hole beside single large tree on steep slope below west end of Glenbain Cottage. Just left of trunk (looking up-valley) trickle of water issues from entrance about ½ m in diameter, about 10-15 m above the river. The cave consists of single body-length tube ending in a clean-washed choke where water dribbles from tiny, impenetrable triangle on right at roof level.

Alternate Names: None recorded.

Notes: Named after Bernie who discovered it, a Jack Russell terrier belonging to John & Erica, caretakers of Glenbain Cottage. Drawn to Ivan Young's attention April 2003 but he did not enter, being dressed in surface gear. Full examination achieved, Mon. 28 June 2004. Dave Warren, Ivan Young, Alan Jeffreys (Goon) & guest Martin Grass descended through thickets of bracken, where Goon made first entry. Lying full length Goon discovered more or less same length as passage.

Name also refers indirectly to 'Bernie the Bolt', eponymous controller of mechanical crossbow in ITV's 1960 & 70s TV game show the Golden Shot presented by Jackie Ray, Bob Monkhouse and Norman Vaughan. Show based on earlier German show 'Der goldene Schuss'. Bolt actually moved by various blindfolded cameramen none of whom were called Bernie to the instructions of a member of the audience.

Hydrographic Feeds: Surface run off.

Hydrographic Resurgences: Intermittent run off into River Traligill.
