Bow Cave (The)

A supratidal rift seacave, running approx N by E into the S end of a stack from very close to the NW entrance of The Bow.

Notes: Access: by sea near high tide, in low swell conditions (not entered yet).

This cave is a pretty good match to the OS namebook description - and there are no obvious alternative candidates nearby. Also, it is visible from the mainland cliff path.

Mentioned in the New Statistical Account of Fordyce Parish, Banffshire, p179. "There are several caves which run more or less into the rocks; but none of them are of any great extent. The chief of these are, Dove Cave, Kitty's Cave, The Bow Cave and Cloutty's Cave between Portsoy and Sandend and Findlater Cave close by the old Castle of the same name." (Findlater Castle is west of Sandend.)
The OS Namebook for Fordyce, Banffshire has: "A small fishure [sic] in cliff, terminating in a small cave, on the sea coast, near Redhythe Point."
Photo 1 shows a diagonal rift, the entrance to this cave, leaning left as it goes up, just right of bottom middle. The entrance to the Bow is immediately to the right, although you cannot see through it from this angle. The high up, roundish arch is High Bow.
Photo 2 shows a zoomed in view of the entrance with a favourable sun angle. You can see through High Bow at top right.
