|Geology:||Crovie Sandstone Formation - sandstone (OR)|
An upper intertidal sea-cave. It has a trapezoidal entrance 2.6m high, 5.4 m wide at the base. It faces N by W (008 degrees). Inside, the E wall curves gently right with a narrowing beach. On the W side the wall goes fairly sharply W and curves round to meet the E wall. On the right as you go in, there is a rocky outcrop which has to be climbed up in order to see the W end of the cave.
Alternate Names: None recorded.
Notes: Located in cliffs to east of Windy Cave.
Figure 2, p129 of ref 1 shows a geological sketch of an unconformity between the Lower Old Red Sandstone of the Crovie group and the overlying Middle Old Red Sandstone of the Findon Group. This cave is shown in the sketch. Photo 1 is of the same cliff.
Access: from Mill Shore, W of Pennan, OR W from Pennan, near low tide. Either way requires scrambling over large boulders. Note that there is a danger of getting cut off by a rising tide.
The BGS overlay shows Gardenstown Conglomerate Formation - which is the cliff above the unconformity.
