Seal's Cove (N)

An intertidal rift cave in the NW corner of a rectangular inlet, facing SE. It has an inner extension following a rift plane on the left (SW) side of the outer chamber.

An example of a corner cave, with the cliff face to the right (NE) and about 4 m NE of the rift plane.

Length and ceiling height are visual estimates. Depth at the entrance was measured at 3.4 m on a tide level of 4.2 m on 21/3/26.

1st Ed 25 in OS has 'Seal's Coves'. Some modern OS have a cave dot about 10m away.
Photo 1 shows the entrance, looking about NW at 19:20 BST on 7 July 22 when the tide level was about 3.2 m ACD. A thick sill of pink granite may be seen on the corner of the cliff on the right and rising gently going away (W) along the S face of it.
Photo 2 taken while approaching this entrance from the south. The previous photo was taken from the far side and a little to the right (NE) of the craig on the right. From here, the granite sill goes up from the right, then horizontally left and then more steeply up. The craig also appears to be mostly, if not all, granite. 21/3/26.

Photo 4 looking into the inner tunnel from the outer chamber. Tide level 4.2 m ACD was a bit high for comfort even if the swell had been less on 21/3/26.
BGS 1:10000 NO99NW solid & drift 1996 shows a fairly wide strip marked Gg, which is biotite-muscovite granite running in a shallow curve round Red Mantle into the entrance to Seals' Coves.
