OS namebook: A narrow opening from the Surface of the ground into a natural underground passage leading to the H.W.M [High Water Mark]: The passage which is a very narrow and dangerous one, is about fifty yards in length, and Situated upon ''Brough Head'' It is said to have got the name from an apprentice Mason who took Shelter in it, at the time the Earl's palace was erected, and who was pursued and killed in the cave.
