Black Cove

An intertidal sea-cave with a large entrance which reduces in size quite quickly. There is a beach inside. It faces NNE. Width at entrance is 5.5 m.

Notes: Access: by sea eg west from Howe of Tarlair beach. It could be reached by paddle board from much closer.

OS Namebook for Banffshire, parish of Gamrie: Black Cove - "A small creek terminating in a Cove which is believed to extend a long distance underground, it is difficult and dangerous to enter." On 26 August 24 the swell was a little too much for a landing, but there was no obvious reason why such a landing would be dangerous in flat calm conditions.
Photo 1 shows the entrance at the S end of a fairly wide inlet/geo. Above it may be seen Herris type fencing around a playing field. On the right an old cast concrete structure which is close to Canmore site 80472. 26/8/24.

Photo 3 looking into the entrance shows how the tunnel reduces in height. You can just see the beach which appeared to the eye to extend another 15-20 m. 26/8/24
