Mine (fireclay & coal), 1950 - c.1980.

Extensive subsurface workings arranged in grid-form, layout of which is shown in the abandonment plan (see refs). The mine mouth was at the N extremity of the complex that extended E to ~[8357 7674] (just short of Beam farm), and S for 1.3 km to ~[NS 8294 7586].

"The mine started by John G Stein and Co. The mined clay was transported underground via the working of the Clayknowes and Milnquarter excavations and straight into the Milnquarter Fireclay Works." [SBH] (see entry for Milnquarter No.1 Mine).

The entrance has been treated and the site by the end of a gated rough track.
