Mine (fireclay), 20th Century.
Relatively large pillar-and-stall mine complex with multiple mine mouths, the extent of which is broadly marked by the plantation to the S of Glenyards. Served by a tramway that led directly to the Glenyards Fire Clay Works located c.300m NNW of the mine, the layout of which is shown on the 1922 OS map. The original mine entrance at the given 8 fig. coordinates (unknown condition) is now within woodland, whilst the demolished fireclay works have been replaced by the housing of Ochil Gardens. Additional mine mouths were eventually established near its S end at approx [NS 8208 7830], and at the N end of a northerly extension that opened out at three entrances along what is now Ochil Gardens [NS 8193 7870].
Mine extended as far S as NS 8221 7823. See abandonment plan (in refs) for detailed layout.
Alternative Names: Glenyards Fireclay Mine
Notes: Originally worked by the Glenyards Fireclay Co. Ltd that went in liquidation in 1918. The works lay idle until purchased by James Anderson & Co Ltd. in 1922. Abandoned in 1960.
Given coordinates approx.
