From Scottish Shale website:
"A mine developed c.1885 by the Lanark Oil Company Ltd to work the Raeburn Shale, subsequently operated by the Caledonian Mineral Oil Company Ltd to work the Fraser Shale and abandoned 1903 on failure of the company. The Fraser Shale workings were eventually linked to Viewfield No. 4 Mine which remained in operation until 1920. Pithead buildings do not seem to have been plotted on OS maps. "Old shafts", marked in the vicinity of Greenfield No. 3 Mine, may have been associated with working of Fells Shale and linked to Tarbrax No. 1 and 2."
