Mine (shale), c.1870-73.

Short-lived workings (serving Cobbinshaw North Paraffin Oil Works) with inclined adit on the hillside above Cobbinshaw Loch. Waste bing survives as a clearing in the conifer forest. Mineral railway now a forest path. [Scottish Shale]

Old shafts, possibly associated with this mine, are located in woodland to the SW (NT 0102 5927 & 0105 5919).

Alternative Names: North Cobbinshaw Mine

Notes: From Scottish Shale website, showing mine plan: "A short-lived attempt to mine Fells Shale at an isolated site on the hillside above Cobbinshaw Loch. It appears that shale was transported from the mine to the Cobbinshaw North Paraffin Oil Works, about a mile distant, by a steeply-graded standard gauge mineral railway."

Not to be confused with the far more extensive 'North Cobbinshaw Mine' located further S, working the Hurlet Limestone / Coal.
