Mine (shale), 19th Century.
"A mine at the outcrop of the Fells shale, supplying Hermand Oil Works. The workings appear to be linked to earlier Fells shale workings to the north. The nearby staging and crushers seem also to have processed the output of Hermand No.5 pit." [Scottish Shale]
