Mine (fireclay), 20th Century.
Extensive pillar & stall mine complex(es), the layouts of which are shown on the 1963 abandonment plans. The given coordinates are for the 'No.1 Mine' adit, located at the NE end of the mine. This adit, which links into the same 'main mine' section as Mines No.2 & 3, has been treated and lies on the edge of Viewfield Manor Holiday Park that is entirely underlain by the room & pillar workings.
The workings of the main mine are present both SE & NW of Lochlibo Road (A736), and the areas to the SE of this road extends SW as far as NS 353 432. The areas of the main complex which lie NW of the A736 are referred to as 'No.5 Mine', and were accessed from a surface adit on the opposite side of the road at approx. NS 3546 4344.
A smaller and separate (but still extensive) complex, over which the farm road to Laigh Patterton passes over its central part, forms the most south-westerly part of Torranyard Mine. The now-buried adit mouth for this SW complex was located at a site with what may be a refuse mound at c. NS 3505 4329.
Alternative Names: Doura Mine, Torranyard Fireclay Mine
Notes: Operated by Glenboig Union Fireclay Co., closed 1963. The initial 'Mine No.1' section that corresponds roughly with the extent of the overlying holiday park was originally termed Doura Mine. This part of the mine complex was operated by Ayrshire Bauxitic Clay Co Ltd and closed in 1942.
Given coordinates derived from MRA.
