Mine (ironstone), 19th-20th Centuries.
Extensive ironstone workings spreading from base of a 150 fm [275m] deep shaft, extending NW beyond Roundshaw Farm to the limits of the Lands of Common, and E beyond Darnconner Farm. Connected to an additional extensive section of mine (underlying Gilmilnscroft No.3 at NS 5609 2362) between Common No.15 & W workings of Berryhill No.3, probably associated with Ballochmyle No.6 Pit (NS 5668 2348, site of).
Complex abandoned in 1922 and shaft area now flooded by large pond. See abandonment plan (in refs) for detailed mine layout.
The Common Coal Pit (No.16) was located just W of Common No.15 (shaft of former buried at NS 5706 2373), the site of which is marked by remnants of refuse bings along the SW bank of the pond.
Alternative Names: Common No.15 Pit
Notes: Ironstone Pit labelled on 1896 OS map as "Common Pit (Ironstone, No.15)".
Geol' survey map states Ballochmyle No.6 encountered the Lugar Blackband Ironstone at 172 fms [315m].
