Mine (Oil Shale), c.1880-94.
Pillar-&-stall workings, partially 'stooped-out', connecting with those from the No.1 Mine to the E. See mine plan in refs for detailed layout. Adit / shaft site now occupied by woodland.
"Mineral Statistics for 1883 record that No.2 mine worked the Dunnet shale by the stoop and room method. The downcast shaft measured 11'x6' and was 830' deep. 11 persons were employed above and 65 below ground (8 and 85 in 1884) under the management of Jno. Louden. The mine was considered non-fiery and dipped at a gradient of 1 in 3." [Scottish Shale]
Alternative Names: Winnyhall No.2, Burntisland No.2 Mine
Notes: Adit marked on geol. survey map. (used in OS georef' tool for 8 fig NGR coordinates), and labelled as 'shaft' on 1895 OS map.
Entry into an open adit should be avoided due to risk of structural instability and toxic gases which are common in old shale mines.
