Dumbuck Aviation Fuel Store

Glasgow Road, Dumbarton, Dumbartonshire.

Underground (earth-sheltered) oil storage tanks. Abandoned but still relatively secure. Surrounded by bonded warehouses with active security.

Oil tanks, presumably associated with railway sidings, recorded as installed by the Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd.

Scottish Oil Agency Ltd signed agreement with LMS Railway for pipeline facilities at Dumbarton depot in 1930.

Depot at Dumbarton. It was reported that on 3rd June, 1930, Lease between Oswald Eden Dickinson and Richard Fairfax William Cartwright and the Agency of half an acre of ground at Dumbarton, part of the lands and estate of Dumbuck , for the erection of a bulk motor spirit and oil depot, from 1st March, 1930, until Whitsunday 1960, with breaks in favour of the tenants at Whitsunday 1940 and every five years thereafter, subject to six months' notice, at a rent of £30 per annum plus £3 per annum in respect of wayleave for pipelines, was executed on behalf of the Agency, which was confirmed. Noted whilst under construction on a Luftwaffe aerial photograph (dated 1939) as a possible mine storage depot, this site is more probably a heavy fuel-oil storage depot. Visible on RAF aerial photographs (106G/UK 92: 3037-3038, 15 May 1946) and Fairey Survey aerial photographs (7915: 220-221, 19 June 1979), the facility has no rail connection or jetty for unloading ordnance. It is comprised of eleven square storage tanks, heavily revetted by earth, within an enclosing earthen bund. There is a wide lay-by for tanker vehicles within the entrance. [HER/WoSAS]
