Lochside No.1 Mine

Townhill, Dunfermline, Fife.

Mine (Coal & Blaes), early 20th Century.

Mine supplying the Lochside Brick and Fireclay Works, which opened in 1902. Site of mine mouth now occupied by woodland (near SE shore of Town Loch / Moncur), and almost certainly infilled owing to its proximity to the car park for Townhill Country Park. This portal was situated at the E side of the No.1 Mine Complex, which was connected to the Appin No.1 & Appin No.2 mines to the E by way of roadways in the Dunfermline Splint Coal. The area of coal workings, mostly in the Two Feet Coal seam, had formerly been accessed by 19th century pits along the W margin at [NT 1001 8899] & [0986 8910]. Blaes from the old pillar-&-stall workings (& nearby refuse bings) were worked for the purpose of brickmaking.

Absent from both 1st & 2nd Ed. OS maps (1856 / 1896), although coal pits noted further N at Townhill on the 1st Ed. at [NT 104 894].
