Carts Burn (Upper) Culvert [Glenbrae Road Outfall]

Cartsdyke, Greenock,, Renfrewshire.

At some point between 1857 and 1888 the Carts Burn near Auchmountain farm was culverted where it passed between the Flint Mill and the road. The flint mill had previously been reached by a short bridge across the burn. After 1857 but before 1888, the flint mill was repurposed to serve as a laundry and the stream was covered where it passed under the laundy site. At some point after 1915 the culvert was extended both upstream and down stream to covert it over between Auchmountain Glen and Glenbrae Road (the access roar to the former Strone Farm).

Notes: The flint mill ground flint for use in pottery glazes. Do not confuse with the Cartsburn Flint Mill in Glasgow (different mill, different burn, same purpose, same name).
