Aqueduct (19th Century).

Part of the Glasgow Corporation Water Works system. See Loch Katrine Tunnel [Intake] (Site #9564) for main entry.

This entry relates to the '1885' aqueduct, which runs alongside the earlier aqueduct for most of its length & was driven/dug following the rapid expansion of Glasgow.

"the construction process involved dividing the [1885] aqueduct into seven sections. The first commenced in January 1886 and involved the new Mugdock Tunnel, which was completed four years later in October 1890. The Duchray/Kelty section was brought into use in June 1893 when the connection between the two aqueducts was opened. The Loch Chon and Blane sections were opened in 1895... the new tunnels, with the exception of the 2.5 mile tunnel on the Kelty section, were driven without air shafts. In the case of Kelty, a shaft was put down at each end. Shafts were only sunk when there was a change of direction requiring survey data from the surface. Unlike the first aqueduct, the shafts were filled in after completion... The last sections of the aqueduct were at its Loch Katrine end in the north, and following their completion, the new system was formally opened by Lord Provost Sir Samuel Chisholm on 21st July 1901."
