The 6" OS map, Lanarkshire Sheet VII.SW, 1897 shows the Springhill Railway a branch of the North British Railway Glasgow and Coatbridge Railway running to Hallhill Colliery Pit no. 1 , southwest of Swinton and Springhill Colliery Pit no. 1, at Camp, south of Springhill.
OF SLATY-BAND IRONSTONE. Some time ago a number of the proprietors of land banded together and got a bore put down at Hallhill Colliery, near this village [Baillieston], which has resulted in the discovery of a seam of slatyband ironstone, some 23 inches in thickness, fathoms below the Killtongue coal. In boring to this depth were also fortunate in passing through a seam of coal termed the which some 2 only inches fathoms under "Killtongue, in thick11e88. This seam of ironstone and coal must add greatly the value of the lands and increase the wealth of the tors in this already extensive coal-producing district, and there is little doubt that, if searched for, the same seam exists all under this district also, as the position in strata the "slaty" found at Hallhill in every particular corresponds with the late discovery of "slaty" at Calderbraes, near Woodhall-the one lying to the N. and the other to the S.E. With Coatbridge in the centre- source of supply of ironstone from the west will prove a valuable acquisition to the iron works, now that the blackband seam is so nearly exhausted. The result of the analysis of the taken from the bore at Malhill, is not yet known, but it confidently assumed that it is of excellent quality. [Glasgow Herald]
