Mine (Coal & Limestone), 1860s-1910.

A significant pillar-and-stall complex underlying almost the entirety of the the housing estate N of Baljaffray Road and that surrounded by Grampian Way to the N of March Burn (housing company probably acquired the same 'Lands of Baljaffray' plot of land which the mine operator (Baljaffray Coal & Lime Co. Ltd) had owned the mineral rights to). See abandonment plan for detailed layout & extent. Most of the complex was mined during the late 19th century, & distal parts of the complex were accessed by additional shafts. The mine was abandoned on 04/06/1910 due to it becoming unprofitable.

Shaft, Hurlet Coal at 62 fathoms, marked on Geological Survey map, south of Baljaffray Road next to Baljaffray Cottages (possibly now under Grampian Way). Adjacent to band of Top Hosie Limestone.

Site is shown on early OS maps with shaft and small spoil heap west of a bank of limekilns with a low quarry face to the east.

Alternative Names: Baljaffray Works, Baljaffray Mine

Notes: Mine did not extend to areas around Alva Gardens / The Poplars / Cromalt Crescent, nor the Mains Plantation which lay N of the licence limits.

The Hurlet Coal & overlying Hurlet Limestone are only separated by a 6"-thick layer of alum shale.

Given length of 1.3km is the approx' distance between the NW & SE extremities of the complex. The combined length of the passages will be far longer (easily >20km).
