Mine (Coal), 20th cent.

Treated adit portal situated nr SE extremity of extensive longwall workings underlying The Myres which were connected to other mines/pits of Balgonie Colliery by way of a NNE-SSW-trending axial tunnel system. Most of the Bellfield Mine is within the Dysart Main Coal, with subordinate workings in the Lower Dysart & Boreland seams around the mine's W end. The W extremity of the Bellsfield workings was at ~[NO 3053 0146], just S of the ruined Barnslee Farm (1.6 km W of the adit mouth), & many sections extended N of the Back Burn. Adit now blocked & buried below worked field.

Alternative Names: Bellfield Mine

Notes: Given length is simply the approx. distance between E & W extremities. The combined passage length will be significantly longer.

Multiple old pits were located beside Barnslee (formerly Backside) where coal was probably worked to outcrop. Patches of woodland mark the former pit sites (vegetated bings?), one being on the opposite side of the main road from St Drostnan's Cemetery.
