Mine (Coal), latest-19th to mid-20th cent.
Site of adit mouth for E-directed inclined (1 in 3) Engine Plane dook into extensive workings of the Bowhouse & Branxton coal seams, & also subordinate workings in the Four Feet Coal. These were worked in conjunction from pits at the Michael Colliery 1.3 km to the SE at East Wemyss [NT 3356 9613]. A highly extensive grid-in-plan complex worked the Dysart Main Coal over this area, but from the Lochhead Pit [site #10986] that was located ca. 100m NW of the adit mouth. Both the mine portal & site of the Lochhead Pit shaft are now occupied by woodland. See mine plan S4323 (on which the mine mouth is shown near the top-right).
"The surface mine driven close to the east of the Lochhead Pit shaft, around 1895, is indicated on maps as 'Surface Dipping'. It is believed to have been originally driven to the Bowhouse Coal seam but in its later years, records show workings in the Branxton Coal." [Fife Pits]
