Mine, Lost. This entry is almost certainly a replication of D'Arcy Limestone Mine (cf. Latta, 2010).
Alternative Names: D'Arcy Mine
Notes: Given 6 fig. coordinates are from Jeffreys (1968) in which 'Easthouses Limestone Mine' is listed (based on an earlier visit from Jeffreys et al).
In Midlothian, sandstones in the Limestone Coal Group have been worked at the following localities; (d) Shaw's Quarry, near Easthouses, 1 mile S.E. of Dalkeith. This rock is yellowish and slightly speckled. It is believed that there are large reserves (Ref. 1910, p. 356; 1942b, p. 278); (e) Three quarries up to a ¼ mile N. 40º E. of Lawfield, near Easthouses (massive sandstone) [BGS]. Shaw's Quarry is marked on the 1894 25" OS map at [NT 3471 6607], now Easthouses Industrial Estate (E of Easthouses Way).
Although information received places the mine under Poplar Street, a mine entrance (marked D'Arcy Mine) and a shaft are indicated on the 1892 OS map in the area to the south-east of Poplar Street closer to West Houses now wooded and marked on modern maps as workings disused. The abandonment plan for the D'Arcy Mine indicates that the workings extended E, i.e. not in the direction of the coordinates originally provided by Jeffreys.
