Generic. name for caves at Red Gate off Back Bay (part of the wider Monreith Bay). Red Gate is an inlet in the cliffs west of Callie's Port with red clay coastal slope over greywacke cliffs.
Just south of St Medans Golf club is a bay called Callie's Port, home to the Red-Gate caves. It's not too easily accessed, but taking my time I was soon scrambling over this very rarely visited bay. Photos of small sea caves, water worn tubes in volcanic roc (basalt?). [jimzglebeblog]
Looking down on Callie's Port and the Red Gate caves the varied and irregular rock formations were noted. One rock indentation in the shape of an upside down heart has been christened Neptune's Seat. [jimzglebeblog]
Alternative Names: None recorded.
Notes: See Red Gate Cave [1], Red Gate Cave [2] and Garrarie's Cave [2]. Dimensions giiven in entries for individual caves.
Red Gate is part of 'Back Bay' not Callie's Port. The name Callie's Port should only apply to the 50 m wide landing place at the extreme east end of Back Bay.
