Probably a historic coal mine from shoreline into cliff with associated drainage channels and remains of dams on the shore.
Perhaps connected to the horizontal level from Dunglass Dean under Dunglass Wood by Birnieknowes farm as far as Lawfield, constructed by a Mr Miller of Shorewood near Norham, Northumberland. [Martine]

Line of excavation from Dunglass Dean to Lawfield interrupted by Bilsdean Burn, close to site of Dunglass Castle and not far from Dunglass Dean so adit entrance may be off Bilsdean Burn not Dunglass Burn.
