This interesting sea cave lies in the cliffs on the southern side of Balnakeil Bay near Durness. It can be reached either by abseiling into the roof by way of a collapse on the cliff tops or by a short swim up a geo at low tide or, with care, by boat. The cave is liberally endowed with stalactite / flowstone / gour formations (especially the rear section hidden beyond a low flat-out crawl at the back of the pebbly beach) and is well worth a visit for those able to do so safely.
Alternative Names: Poul-a-ghloup, Poll a' Gloup, Balnakiel Gloup Cave
Notes: Lengths from S. Brooks et al. (measured 2024-25). Includes 2025 new chamber extension.
Earliest known published reference is in Anderson 1863, in which it is referred to as 'Poul-a-ghloup' ; poul almost certainly being an attempt at writing the Gaelic word 'Poll' (in this context meaning 'to make a hole'), and Ghloup being derived from the Old Norse word glupr (meaning an opening, or chasm).
Hydrographic Feeds: Balnakeil Bay
