The cave, pointed out by Mrs McPhaill of Altnamara is formed of two leaning conglomerated boulders at the foot of the cliff by the road. It measures 5 metres deep by 2 metres in width and is 1 metre high. It is half blocked by rubbish.

About 1869, a food vessel was recovered from a cave at the foot of Creag an Eig, Ledaig, but there is no record of any burial remains. The urn is a well preserved, entire speciman 4" in height and ornamented on the upper portion by rows of oblique strokes executed by finger nail. It is now in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS). [Canmore]

Alternative Names: Creag an Eig (Cave of)

Notes: Reported find of a food vessel in cave at the foot of Creag an Eig.

This [Creag an Eig] is the precipice rising above the main road perpendicularly to the height of nearly 100 feet. It is currently stated that when Berigonium [supposedly nearby] was in the possession of the Romans, this Craig was used as a place of execution for Prisoners. Hence the name. Sig: [Signification] "The Craig of Death" "There is a tradition that Beregonium was destroyed by fire from Heaven in confirmation of which the summit of Dun bhail an Righ projecting and overhanging the road, has a volcanic appearance and a most hideous aspect." Ext: [Extract] Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]

In the entry "Creag an Eig (Cave of)", the given NGR and map location would be 500 m S of where Creag an Eig is marked on both the OS Explorer map 376 and on the map given for "Caillich (Uamh) [Ledaig]". [Trevor Faulkner]
