Sea Cave located approx. 100 m NE of the natural arches at MacFarquar's Bed.
This name applies to a large Cave about two and a fourth miles from Cromarty on the Shore of the Moray Firth. It is capable of sheltering at least two hundred men and is resorted to very frequently for shelter by large bodies of Gipsies or Tinkers. On the property of Colonel Ross.
Alternative Names: Gipsies' Cave, Gipisies' Cave
Notes: Although this area is named after MacFarquhar, very little is known of the man other than he was a smuggler, the rest of the stories were thought to have been lost over the years. The area was also thought to of been a sometime haunt for gypsies as was reported to the Inverness Courier in 1829 by a famous local geologist by the name of Hugh Miller. (trover.com)
CROMARTY, August 15, 1833.
" I was a very few days ago at MacFarquhar's Bed and the gypsies' cave, the scene of my ' Boatman's Tale.' (Hugh Miller)
