Black Water Cave [Islay]

Islay/ Bagh an Da Dhorus, W of Rhuvaal, Argyllshire.

Raised beach sea cave, contains deposits. [Islay Caves Project]

Probably the cave named Black Water Cave by Graham Little previously Bàgh an Dà Dhoruis (7).

10 m wide, 12 m high entrance. Access easy but tidal.

The entrance to this cave displays striking angular architecture. The first 55 m are flooded (deep and dark water), with the wide entrance pool leading into railway-like tunnel. Ingress by some form of craft would seem the only sensible option. It would be a very bold swi! At the end of the flooded section is a shoreline with a 9 m long and 6 m wide chamber with good head height and a compacted mud floor.

On the right-hand side of this chamber is a natural plaque holding some graffiti, whilst on the left is a long fringe of stalactites and a few stubby stalagmites, A narrow rift extends beyond the stalactite fringe. It is likely it extends 5 m beyond the back of the main cave but a combination of mud and constriction deterred exploration. [Caves of Islay]
