Bankhead Coal and Fireclay Mine owned 1800-1885 by Misses Whygham and 1890-1896 by James Irving McConnel, Sanquhar, R.S.O.
Bankhead appears to be largely an open-cast site. There are a number of Limestone quarries in the wider area around Bankhead most notably at Monkcastle [NS 28955 47705] where there was an extensive fireclay mine now the only mine indicated on Streetmap.
